Smith County Educator Rachel Kelley, Principal at Gordonsville Elementary School

Today’s “Educator Spotlight” features Rachel Kelley, Principal at Gordonsville Elementary School.

Rachel has been in education for 13 years. For the past three years, she has been an administrator at Gordonsville Elementary.

Smith County Insider interviewed Rachel about her experiences as an educator, and this is what she had to say.

SCI: When did you realize that you wanted to be a teacher?

RK: I come from a long line of educators. My mom, dad, and grandfather were all teachers and I decided I was going to do something different with my life. I worked in healthcare and as a Licensed Practical Nurse after graduating from Gordonsville High School. While it was a rewarding career, I later decided I wanted to pursue the path of education and am so thankful for that decision.

SCI: What is the most rewarding part of your job?

RK: The most rewarding part of my job is being able to play a small role in my students’ lives. The students in our school start as third graders and I am fortunate to get to see them grow academically and socially through the sixth grade. My first group of students have now graduated high school. It has been exciting to see the paths they have taken as young adults.

SCI: What inspires you?

RK: I am inspired by those who give themselves selflessly for our students. Students are faced with so many challenges today. I see teachers, educational assistants, custodians, cafeteria staff, parents, central office staff volunteering time and working together to ensure our students have what they need. I truly believe this will assist in shaping our students into kind, responsible adults in the future.

SCI: What’s the best piece of advice you have for your students?

RK: No matter what you face in life, always try your best and be kind to others.

SCI: What do you like to do in your free time?

RK: In my free time, I like to read and spend time with family.

SCI: Is there anything else you would like to share with the readers of Smith County Insider?

RK: Gordonsville Elementary likes to keep all stakeholders informed. You can visit us on Facebook and our school website at https://www.smithcoedu.com/o/gordonsville. We will post the latest information on here and the Remind App.

Thank you for your leadership and dedication to your students, Rachel!
