On September 1st, 2021, a motorcycle was traveling eastbound on I40 when the driver failed to navigate a right hand curve and ran off the left side of the roadway into the median. It struck the end of a guardrail off the left side of the roadway. After the impact, the bike went airborne and traveled east a considerable distance off the roadway and into a nearby patch of shrubbery in the median .
The motorcycle came to final rest off the left side of the roadway, in a patch of shrubbery facing south. The rider of was thrown from the motorcycle after impacting the end of the guardrail and traveled northeast a considerable distance into the median.
The rider, Robert Heffemen, was wearing a helmet but was deceased.
