(Smith County Insider Press) – On February 7, 2020, Sergeant Ridge Long and Deputy Jake O-Neal were dispatched to the intersection of Alexandria Highway and New Middleton Highway after a report of a male passed out in a white Nissan Altima.

According to the police report, the driver of the vehicle, Samuel West (30, Knoxville), was laying unresponsive in the driver’s seat with his foot on the brake, the vehicle in drive, and the engine running. When Sergeant Long opened the door of the vehicle in order to secure the vehicle and conduct a welfare check of West, an odor of raw marijuana was immediately detected. A search of the vehicle yielded approximately 1 ounce of Psilocybin (shrooms), 4 grams of marijuana, eight used syringes, two spoons, one glass pipe, and a set of digital scales.

According to the police report, West was unable to control his body movements while speaking with Sergeant Long. Additionally, his pupils were restricted and he was unable to stay awake and alert. West performed poorly when given a Standardized Field Sobriety Test. During a records check via dispatch, West’s license was found to be suspended for failure to pay fines and a prior DUI.

West was placed under arrest and taken to Riverview Regional Medical Center for a BAC draw before being taken to the Smith County Sheriff’s Office for booking. West is charged with driving under the influence, mfg/del/sell controlled substances, possession of controlled substances, driving on revoked, and felony possession of drug paraphernalia.
