Dollar General Store Shoplifter Evades Arrest in Carthage

August 5, 2015

(Smith County Insider Press) Carthage, Tenn. – The Carthage City Police Department was dispatched to the Dollar General Store this past Sunday night around 10:00 p.m. on the report that a customer had shoplifted several items.

Before making the phone call to authorities, the manager of the store confronted a customer she believed had shoplifted several items. When she approached the individual, he left the store and then ran across the street to Acapulco Grill.

On arrival to the scene, Carthage City Police Department spotted the subject running into the wooded area next to Tractor Supply and Industrial Drive. Soon there after, the responding officers made the report of seeing the individual climbing the fence off of Industrial Drive. (This area is known to most as the old Robert Shaw property).

Around this same time, it was then reported that the subject had come to the wooded area between Smith County Bank and the Robert Shaw property. An officer standing by in Pizza Hut parking lot, made the verbal command to halt and lay down on the ground. After not complying a Carthage City Police Officer deployed his taser. The subject was then arrested with the assistance of Smith County Sheriff’s Department Deputy Nick Campbell.

The subject was Tyler Alan Leach and has been charged with theft and evading arrest.
