Carthage Police Officer stabbed; TBI investigates

A broken window is boarded up at Carthage City Hall after a man broke into the building and assaulted a Carthage Police Officer overnight.

At the request of the District Attorney General Tommy Thompson, TBI Agents responded to an incident at Carthage City Hall during the night in which a police officer was assaulted.

Early reports indicate that a Smith County deputy and a Carthage police officer responded to a report of a break-in attempt at Carthage City Hall. Reports indicate that as officers encountered the male subject, he assaulted the Carthage officer with a knife.

The subject has been identified as Ralph Overstreet of Carthage, Tennessee.

The assaulted officer was transported to Vanderbilt Hospital in Nashville to be treated for a non-life-threatening injury. The officer is home recovering now, according to Carthage Police Chief Britt Davis.

Overstreet is currently being held at the Smith County Jail.
