(Smith County Insider Press) – On January 18, 2020, Deputy Dallas Eddie was conducting patrol on Interstate 40 when he entered the rest area and observed an SUV parked illegally.

Deputy Eddie made contact with the driver of the vehicle, Cassandra Beard (35, Powell, Tennessee), and advised her that she was parked illegally. In addition to the driver, there was a juvenile passenger in the passenger seat and a male passenger in the back seat. While looking for her license, Beard stated that she lived in Knoxville and had gone to Nashville for a road trip and they had stopped at the rest area to get a little sleep before heading home. While speaking with Beard and the other occupants, Deputy Eddie smelled the odor one would associate with marijuana emitting from the vehicle.

According to the police report, Deputy Eddie asked Beard if there was anything illegal in the vehicle, and she handed him a baggie containing a leafy green substance. She stated there was more marijuana in the center console. A search of the vehicle revealed approximately 22 grams of a green leafy substance in multiple baggies, a digital scale, 2 marijuana pipes, and a marijuana cigarette. Beard stated that the substance was marijuana and admitted that she was selling it.

Beard was placed under arrest and transported to the Smith County Sheriff’s Office for booking. The 16 year old juvenile was taken to the Smith County Sheriff’s Office and released into the custody of his legal guardian.

Beard is charged with MFG/DEL/SELL Controlled Substances and felony possession of drug paraphernalia.
